Martians and Earthlings

That the book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, sold over two million copies1 lends credence to something I read: women spend more time thinking about what men think than men spend thinking. If you’re rolling your eyes, I’ll rephrase. That the book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, sold over two million copies lends credence to something we already know: men are from Mars, women are from Earth.

When a friend brought the poster2 that inspired the one below to my attention, “Hilarious!” was my response. But, I wondered what motivated the author to coin the words? Was it true? Was it a joke? Was it a barb aimed at Steve Harvey enthusiasts?

think like a man

I asked several brave men who saw the poster to let their thoughts roam and pen flow. I hope you’ll join the conversation beginning Sunday. Perhaps, if you keep an open mind, you might learn or disagree with a thing or two. Or you’ll share your laughter with a friend or three.

If you missed The Hunter Games, now might be a good time to catch up.

Take lemons, make life, & jump for joy!

  1. Steve Harvey’s book rose to number one on The New York Times Bestseller list after its release in 2009. A feature movie, a sequel to the movie, and an expanded version of the book has since been released.
  2. The original poster: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154257033455431&set=a.10151940356485431.878240.602760430&type=1&theater

  1. Oh I can’t wait to read their responses! May their responses align with my thoughts right now: “where in the world are the blue stick figures disappearing to? Where?” I rest my case. Thank you. Lol! 😛

    1. Where are the blue stick figures disappearing to? Good question! I’m glad you noticed the ‘slant’ in the poster, which was the source of some jesting in my circle 🙂 Okay, I hope you find some answers later today …..

  2. I’ve heard Earthling, Earther, Earthian, Terran, and Tellurian for people from Earth. And Flatlander as an insult. Lunarian, Selenites, Loonies for Moon-dwellers.

  3. There are many ways the book can be dissected. We should note that in the movie version of the book, all the participants did seem to make a mess of things just from living off the pages of the book. That being said, I sure it helps to be 2 steps ahead. However, if I had to think like a man, I might as well be a man

      1. There is God oo! You just reminded me of my evening today. Mother had that video Patience Jonathan on replay while I was trying to study for a research paper. It’s everywhere! Timi, there is God oo! 🙂

  4. Certainly keen to read/ see what other chaps have got to say… even though I think books like this one (I read it) essentially end up being self fulfilling prophecies.. There are far too many specific contexts for everything a guy or girl says, or how they think, to be distilled into one volume. Guess that’s just my (perceived) inner outlier thinking out loud 🙂

  5. I really am not sure it is the difference between men and women or something within each individual. I have always laughed and enjoyed generalizations and theories on why marriages only last 50% of the time, here in the U.S. Not sure if the world has better statistics?
I think, for me, my expectations and my exes sharing ‘promises’ led me to believe the words and actions at the time the marriages started. Any one of my good guy friends or girl friends are incredulous why this happened three times! I just have given up trying to figure it out. I think my Dad and my youngest brother are the examples I was hoping for. Someday, maybe out of the blue, I will find my last great man who will fill in the gaps that have been in my relationships. Timi, good post and I like your perspective and sense of humor shown here!

    1. Sometimes even with the best intentions/actions, relationships go south. It takes two to tango. I hope you find that which will bring you great fulfillment and joy.

Nobody knows it all. The writers are a mix from different backgrounds and basically, they were supposed to look at the poster and write whatever came to mind! I think come Sunday, we’ll agree, disagree, and I hope laugh 🙂

      Thanks for sharing Robin.
